sofrimento. This is a quantitative and qualitative study with intent to learn and analyse the Social Representations designed by professionals of the nursing team that takes care of people with infected wounds, through the determination of the central nucleus and peripherical system. This study was carried out in 3 health units in Feira de Santana-Bahia, 2005. Sponthaneous evocations were collected from132 nursing professionals stimulated by the frase “care of people winth infected wounds” analysed by the software EVOC (Vergés,1992) as well as interviews of 33 professionals that were submitted to Bardin’s (20000) thematic analysis. The results show that the structure of the social representations as to the care of people with infected wounds, has central elementspain, smell, care and secretion. The term “care” comes with a meaning of caution and precaution showing the fear of contamination confirmed by the presence of terms such as - infection, purulence, contamination, negligence and dirt. Cognitions such as support, privation, needy, weak, dependence and insecurity form the peripherical system with contents that result from the concrete experiences in the practice between the one who cares and the one who is cared for. For the nursing team the subject of its care is a “fragilized being ” because of the physical and psychological pain caused by the smells emanating from the wound and social isolation. Taking care of people with infected wounds, for the subjects of this study is represented by three categories: “Care as suffering” due to the coliving with a person that suffers and is needy of attention is discriminated and rejected, is aslamed and uncomfortable because he/she feels repulsion, is afraid of contamination, is frustrated, insecure and impotent. “Care as an obligation” so to fulfill the professional paper and demand special effort to care for the other. And “ Care as a reward” for relieving suffering, feel omself useful and heal the wound. For them, taking care of these people brings up ambiguous emotions that range from pain to reward. Even through these professionals identify the privations of the ones being cared for, they are influenced by the repulsive nature of the wounds and show through this study that what prevails while taking care of these people is suffering. |
