De templo jesuítico à Sé Catedral: transformações ornamentais e iconográficas da igreja do Colégio após a expulsão dos jesuítas

Abstract

A quarta igreja do Colégio da Bahia – após a expulsão da Companhia de Jesus no século XVIII – abrigou o cabido da diocese a partir de 1766, em virtude da antiga igreja da Sé se encontrar em obras. O traslado provisório tornou-se posteriormente definitivo e o templo dos jesuítas passou a Catedral metropolitana ainda no século XVIII. Em 1923 foi elevada à categoria de Basílica e seu arcebispo intitulado Primaz do Brasil. A pesquisa se propôs a estudar o que ocorreu com o programa iconográfico da igreja concebido pela Companhia de Jesus após a expulsão daqueles religiosos. Entre os objetivos está o estudo da ornamentação da Catedral Basílica considerando as alterações realizadas; as reformas, datas e possíveis orientações; a catalogação de artistas, artífices e profissionais envolvidos com obras e eventos relevantes no templo; a análise de transformações iconográficas e estilísticas, assim como a relação com a estética jesuítica. Para o estudo do contingente foi considerada a abrangência entre 1760 – a partir do Inventário da igreja – até as últimas intervenções ocorridas em dezembro de 2019. As principais fontes que fundamentaram a investigação são documentos primários, fotografias de acervos variados e da autora, bibliografia sobre o tema, teses e dissertações, entrevistas e o acompanhamento das obras de restauração pelo IPHAN entre 2015 e 2018, realizada mediante recursos do PAC – Cidades Históricas. Entre os resultados obtidos nos foi possível identificar as principais obras e reformas ocorridas na igreja e os elementos decorativos atribuídos ao período jesuítico e pós-jesuítico. A pesquisa contribui, igualmente, com uma revisão bibliográfica a respeito dos elementos decorativos e a pintura religiosa dos altares, suas atribuições e interpretações dos pintores jesuítas. Avança no esclarecimento e compreensão dos elementos decorativos e históricos da ornamentação da quarta igreja do Colégio da Bahia, e como ocorreu o desenvolvimento artístico dos altares. Esclarece que prevaleceu nos primórdios da quarta igreja dos jesuítas a pintura decorativa a têmpera nos tetos, paredes, cimalhas e cantaria. A execução da talha nos altares foi gradativa, dentro das reformas e melhorias da igreja ainda no período jesuítico. No período pós-jesuítico identifica e contribui com novas proposições a respeito das reformas na capela-mor e demais capelas da igreja, além da sacristia e o ambiente da antiga livraria, posteriormente destinado para museu de arte religiosa. A pesquisa apresenta dois Apêndices: no primeiro estão desenhos com os motivos de pinturas parietais que ornamentam a igreja e a identificação entre período jesuítico e pós-jesuítico; no segundo, a relação de profissionais envolvidos com obras e eventos correlatos, desde o século XVIII até o XXI.

The fourth church of the College of Bahia, after the expulsion of the Society of Jesus in the 18th century– housed/sheltered the Chapter of the archdiocese from 1766, because the old church of the Se was under works. The provisional transfer later became definitive and the temple of the Jesuits became the metropolitan Cathedral still during the 18th century. In 1923 it was elevated to the category of Basilica and its archbishop received the title of Primate of Brazil. The research proposed to study what happened with the iconographic program of the church, conceived by the Society of Jesus after expelling those religious. Among the objectives is to study the ornamentation of the Cathedral Basilica considering the alterations made; the renovations, dates and possible orientations; cataloging artists, craftsmen and professionals involved with works and relevant events in the temple; the analysis of iconographic and stylistic transformation, as well as the relation with the Jesuitical aesthetics. In order to study the contingent, the coverage of the material starting in 1760 – beginning with the Church Inventory – until the last interventions in December of 2019 was considered. The main sources that substantiated the investigation are primary documents, photos of several collections and from the author, literature on the theme, theses and dissertations, interviews and follow-up of renovation works by IPHAN between 2015 and 2018, executed with resources from the PAC – Historic Cities. Among the results obtained, the authors were able to identify the main works and renovations made in the church and the decorative elements attributed to Jesuitical and post-Jesuitical periods. The research also contributes to a literature review regarding the decorating elements and the religious painting of altars, its attributions and interpretations from Jesuit painters. It also explains that in the early days of the fourth church of Jesuits, the decorative painting, the temper on the ceilings, walls, talons and stonework prevailed. The execution of carving in altars was gradual, within the renovations and improvements of the church still during the Jesuit period. During the post-Jesuit period, it identifies and contributes with new propositions regarding renovations in the presbytery and other chapels of the church, besides the sacristy and the environment of the old library, posteriorly destined to museums of religious art. The research contains two Appendices: the first one presents the designs with motifs of parietal paintings that ornament the church and the identification between Jesuitical and post-Jesuitical period; in the second one contains the list of professionals involved with works and correlated events, from the 18th to the 21st centuries.
