Vivências de estudantes não-bináries na Universidade Federal da Bahia

Abstract

This study presents the condition of non-binary students in two distinct ways. First, exploratory research was conducted through an integrative literature review with the aim of understanding the experiences of non-binary students in universities. The methodology consisted of searching for scientific articles in the Web of Science database using descriptors capable of covering the multiplicity of terms used in academic works on the non-binary population. The multiple nomenclatures attributed to this population were analyzed, as well as the experiences of students in university spaces in countries such as Canada, Australia and the USA, showing how the heterocisnormative perspective interferes with gender affirmation and the feeling of safety on campus. The other moment of the research, which was configured as a qualitative empirical investigation with incursion into the field, in the Brazilian reality, aimed to answer the question that guided the entire work: how are the experiences of non-binary students at the Federal University of Bahia? To this end, the methodological approach was based on semistructured interviews, with data analysis and interpretation being carried out based on the theoretical assumptions of Content Analysis and the analytical-theoretical support of feminist, transfeminist and queer theory perspectives. While internationally, students reported being afraid to report negative experiences related to heterosexism at university, in the Brazilian context, most students reported not having confidence in the resolution of complaints or even not knowing where to report violence. On the other hand, the research shows that the university is a potential source of emancipation for these students and also points to the need to update administrative practices at this institution.
