The movie business is a multi-billion-dollar industry that is an important part of any country's cultural economy. However, some projects are successful and many are not. Given the amount of risk and investment required to produce a film, it is essential to investigate which factors are relevant in determining a film's box office success. An extensive review and classification of the industry's situation and structure is carried out and the ways in which a film might behave in the market are presented, pointing out which characteristics (genre, budget, star power) are the most significant predictors in determining box office revenue and/or profitability of the films. Based on this, a critical review of the Brazilian film industry is presented in order to discuss the options for local economic policies aimed at the national film industry, given its particularities.pt_BR
