Abstract

Goldfish Memory (2003) is a romantic comedy written and directed by the Dubliner Liz Gill. The film explores the dynamics of affective relationships in the contemporary context of globalization. Dublin, the capital of Ireland, is represented as a metropolis of cultural and identity diversity. It is a narrative that explains the permeability of territorial boundaries, which currently do not demarcate limits or prevent contact between different cultural systems. The cinema can present social, economic and political phenomena of a community, through diverse aesthetic resources. Thus, a film can offer relevant content to understand the realities of individuals, groups and nations. Based on this understanding, the general objective of this work is to analyze contemporary features of Irish identity in the film Goldfish Memory, observing how the Irish intertwine in the cultural networks woven by globalization, focusing on the dynamics of the affective bonds of the characters. Specific objectives include: discussing concepts related to identity, postmodernity and Irishness; exposing identity elements present in the film; and analyzing this content through the studied theory. The relevance of the work is related to the importance of propagating Irish film productions that offer significant cultural content to the academic community. It is important to highlight that Irish works are still rarely explored in Brazil, mainly in Bahia. This research offers a contribution to expand the space for dialogue with other cultures within the local academic scene.
